Street performers are one of the fabulous delights of European city living. They provide immediate relief from the grind of the past working week and transform even the grumpiest person into an enraptured holidaymaker.
Never ones to stint on providing the best “street artistesâ€, the Swiss have a deserved reputation for organising wonderfully eclectic street festivals. And this weekend, the village of Meyrin near Geneva is no exception. Street Arts Festival Gratte-Bitume (Asphalt Scratcher) runs on Friday evening (13 June) on Saturday afternoon (yes you can still do your shopping) and all day Sunday 15 June. The festival offers a packed programme of 28 performances by 17 acts including fire-eaters, street theatre, magic, comedy skits, magic lantern show and acrobatics. While a few of the acts are better appreciated if you speak good French, more than enough are just pure fun spectacles. You can watch for free on the village’s streets in between refreshing yourself at the many cafés and street stalls.
