Athens proposes tax amnesty on Swiss assets

According to Panagiotis Nikoloudis, the Greek minister in charge of fighting corruption, Greece is proposing a tax amnesty on assets in Switzerland and other countries outside Greece. Mr Panagiotis Nikoloudis was interviewed by the Swiss newspaper Le Temps. The move is designed to encourage the repatriation of money to Greece and will tax undeclared capital at 21% instead of 20%. If the assets are not declared within the allowed time frame the tax will rise to 40%.

“We do not know the amounts” said Panagiotis Nikoloudis, however in an interview with Libération he announced that that they had identified 3,500 accounts containing undeclared revenue and were working on investigating 24,000 more. According to some estimates Greeks could have as much as 200 billion euros in Swiss bank accounts.
