Vaud fireworks ban sparks anger

Ahead of the 1^st of August celebrations of Swiss national day, fireworks have been banned in the canton of Vaud unless set off from the lake by professionals at least 300 metres from the shore. Those working in the industry are angry and think the ban goes too far. Some Vaud fire fighters have also said they are comfortable taking the risk. The Vaud state council disagrees.

In addition, fireworks professionals complain of a double standard after fireworks were allowed at the Paleo music festival near Nyon recently.

A total ban has also been applied in the canton of Jura and most of Valais. Geneva, Fribourg and Neuchatel don’t have blanket bans.

Unless there is a lot of rain in the next few days residents of Vaud will have to go down to the lake or train their binoculars on Geneva or Port-Valais if they want to see any fireworks on Swiss national day.
