Swiss People’s Party (UDC) set to win record share of votes in Swiss election

A Switzerland-wide online survey done by the newspaper 20 Minutes last week, predicts the Swiss People’s Party (UDC/SVP) is set to win the largest share of votes in its history at the next Federal election. In the last election four years ago the party won 26.6% of votes. The poll predicts it will win 29% next month.

The poll also foresees the Socialist Party staying in second place but with their share falling by 1.1% to 17.6%. The PDC (CVP)  is expected to lose 1.1%, and win 11.2%,  the PBD (BDP) to lose 0.5% and win 4.9%, the Liberal Green Party to lose 0.3% and win 5.1%, and the Green Party to lose the most: 1.5% reducing its share to 6.9%. The only predicted gainer is the PLR (FPD), which is predicted to increase its share by 1.7% to 16.8% of the total. This poll is consistent with another published last week by the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation.

The 20 Minutes article also notes that some had expected recent images of the young refugee Aylan, who was drowned recently, to benefit the Socialist Party and harm the UDC, which would like to see stricter border controls, and is constantly critical of the government’s stance on immigration, which it sees as too liberal.
