UN Geneva’s open day a huge success

Last weekend the UN in Geneva opened its doors to celebrate its 70th anniversary. There were an impressive 19,000 visitors according to the UN Facebook page. In a Tribune de Genève article, UN spokesperson Rhéal LeBlanc said “it has been a phenomenal success”.

Director-General Michael Moller and former Secretary-General Kofi Annan were present along with the mayor of Geneva, ambassadors and diplomats, NGOs, artists, dancers, singers and activists.

Dancers from the Ballet du Grand Théâtre performed a piece called “Glory” in front of more that 2,000 people.

Crowds gathered around the Rebirth sculpture, in Ariana Park. The work is a symbol of the rebirth of society and emergence of a new world. It was designed by the Italian artist Michelangelo Pistoletto, to celebrate the anniversary. 

Each of the 193 rocks weighs around 300 kgs. 193 is the current number of UN members.
