Not the greatest week dear cinephiles, but a fine one for your kids with the Panda film, which you will also enjoy. 1 to see, 2 to skip.
KUNG FU PANDA 3 ***
What a delight to see an animated film for children that has fun and action but also an underlying feeling of goodness and self worth! There’s obviously the evil versus good (in the ferocious Kai wanting to destroy all in his path to power vs cute Po trying his best to resist) and nonstop high jinks, but the kernel of the tale is about everyone finding their own best self. And the path to it is both exciting and adorable, with the Panda babies often stealing the show. I enjoyed it thoroughly!
BATMAN vs SUPERMAN – Dawn of Justice *1/2
This is a dark, convoluted yarn about two super heroes turning on each other. Guess the Hollywood money machine must come up with these outlandish, perverse twists to draw in the crowds. And it goes on about it for almost three hours of tiresome mayhem and pseudo philosophical and theological tirades. Give yourself a break and save your time and money for more worthwhile moments.
SECRET IN THEIR EYES *1/2
Despite a star cast, including Julia Roberts, Nicole Kidman and Chiwetel Ejiofor (tough name, good actor), this American remake of the outstanding 2009 Argentinean film (which took the best foreign film Oscar that year), suffers badly in comparison to the original. Somehow none of the characters ring true, the thriller part has become exaggerated, and the deep love story is somehow lost in the horror of the tale. Why touch a masterpiece, or rather, “why fix it, if it ain’t broke”?
