In 2016, the Swiss plateau experienced its driest December since records began in 1864, according to Swiss Meteo. Across the area between Lake Geneva in the west and Lake Constance in the East, an average of only 2mm of precipitation was recorded. Across half of the plateau, not a single drop of moisture fell.

From 1981 to 2010, average annual precipitation of close to 90mm was recorded in December. Before 2016, the driest December recorded was in 1963, which saw 4.8mm of precipitation. The next driest December was 6mm in 1864.
On Wednesday and Thursday, snow fell across much of Switzerland, including Zurich, Luzern, St. Gallen, La Chaux-de-Fonds, Bern, Lausanne, Vevey and Basel.
Ski resorts in Vaud and Valais in the west of the country received light snow. It also snowed at most resorts in the eastern part of the country such as St. Moritz and Davos as well. Click here for more detailed forecasts.
