Vaud cabinet remains left-leaning and majority female after Sunday’s vote

Voters in the canton of Vaud put two more politicians from the left into the canton’s diving seat on Sunday. The first round of voting left two of seven cabinet (Conseil d’Etat) positions open. Sunday’s winners, the two with the most votes, were existing councillor Béatrice Métraux (49.96%), from the Green party, and the socialist Cesla Amarelle (43.88%).

This result means women will continue to hold a majority of the canton’s executive positions. After Sunday there are now three socialists: Pierre-Yves Maillard, Nuria Gorrite and Cesla Amarelle, and Béatrice Métraux from the Greens. The other three: Pascal Broulis, Jacqueline de Quattro and Philippe Leuba are all members of the PLR.

The result means there is no change in the left / right balance in the canton’s executive.

During the canton’s recent parliamentary election (Grand Conseil) the socialists lost 3 seats, the PLR picked up an additional 3, the UDC lost 2 and the Greens gained 2.
