Born as the La Tribune de Lausanne in 1893, the newspaper Le Matin, will roll off printing presses for the last time on 21 July this year, announced its owner Tamedia today.
The newspaper, which lost CHF 6.3 million last year, will lay off 41 staff and continue as a digital publication. Over the last decade the paper has lost CHF 34 million.
An editorial team of 14 will continue to create content for lematin.ch under the leadership of a new editor. Le Matin Dimanche, a Sunday newspaper, will continue.
Vaud’s parliament voiced concern at the decline of media diversity in French-speaking Switzerland, in a statement on its website.
Today, media face the double challenge of readers’ reluctance to pay – why pay when public broadcasters and others provide a free alternative a few clicks away? – and the loss of advertising revenue to digital giants such as Google and Facebook.
