Switzerland’s two goals were scored by Granit Xhaka and Xherdan Shaqiri. Both of these Swiss players are of Kosovan descent, so winning against Serbia, a country that refuses to recognize Kosovo, would have had an additional emotional dimension for the pair.
The match possession split was 59% (Switzerland) and 41% (Serbia). Switzerland had 20 shots at goal compared to Serbia’s 13.
Some bookmakers are offering odds as certain as 1/100 for Switzerland to qualify for the next round.
Switzerland’s next match will be against Costa Rica at 20:00 (Swiss time) on Wednesday 27 June 2018.
The most likely result is a Swiss win, but nothing in football is guaranteed.
