A 64-year-old in prison in the canton of Bern recently asked the organisation Exit for suicide assistance.
It is rare for someone in a Swiss prison to make such a request, although Pierre Beck of Exit told RTS that a gravely ill prisoner in Geneva made a similar request last year.
Exit is taking the man’s request seriously but said it does not comment on individual cases.
The case generates significant ethical questions. While human rights laws allow a person to decide what they want to do with their life and remains, there are no specific laws on assisted suicide for prisoners. And, according to RTS, Bern’s judicial office would not want to see prisoners escaping their sentences by resorting to suicide.
