Nearly 250,000 Swiss drivers caught by French speed cameras last year

Many Swiss drivers holidaying in France last year returned home to a nasty surprise among the pile of mail waiting for them. In 2017, 249,236 were caught speeding by French speed cameras.

The French government raked in over 1 billion euros from 17 million heavy-footed drivers in 2017, up 2% on 2016, mainly because of the introduction of 72 new mobile speed cameras, often used at roadworks sites.

After French, Belgians were at the top of the podium with 463,092 fines, followed by Spain (452,191), Germany (378,780), Netherlands (345,129), Italy (364,388) and Switzerland (249,236).

The busiest speed camera is located on the A40 between Geneva and Chamonix Mont Blanc. This camera caught 125,074 speeders in 2017.

Foreign drivers received 17.6% of tickets and paid 34.2% of the total fines collected.
