Some drugs in category B will become available without a prescription in certain circumstances – a drug’s category is shown by a Swissmedic logo on the packet. The logos can be seen here and a drug’s category can be searched here.
The list of new prescription-free drugs will by published by 1 January 2019 on the Swissmedic website and will include some current category C medicines.
In addition, from 2019, pharmacists will be able to sell prescription drugs to patients on long term medication for up to a year after a prescription has expired.
The change is aimed at reducing healthcare costs by allowing patients more direct, efficient and cost effective access to medicines.
