Strasbourg shooting suspect shot dead

According to BFMTV, French police have shot and killed the man suspected of killing and injuring people in a shooting in Strasbourg on Tuesday night. The man was killed in a police shootout in Neudorf in Strasbourg a little after 9 pm.

At 19:50 on Tuesday evening, a man shot and killed three people and injured a further 13 people in the French city of Strasbourg.

Cherif Chekatt, the 29 year-old suspect who was born in Strasbourg, had an extensive criminal record and spent time in several prisons, including one in Basel in Switzerland, according to Le Matin. According to the newspaper Blick, the suspect was sentenced to a year and a half in prison for burglary and spent 16 months in a prison in Basel.

In France, the suspect had been assigned a fiche “S” because of his links with radical Islam. A fiche “S” is an indicator used by French law enforcement to flag an individual considered to be a serious threat to national security, allowing surveillance but not arrest. The “S” stands for Sûreté de l’État.
