On 25 February, representatives of Switzerland and the United Kingdom signed an agreement preserving the rights already acquired by citizens residing in the other’s territory after the UK leaves the EU.

Any rights already acquired by a citizen of either country under current EU rules will be preserved for life.
The agreement was signed by Switzerland’s state secretary Mario Gattiker and the UK’s state secretary Christopher Heaton-Harris in Bern on Monday.
The agreement, approved by Switzerland’s Federal Council on 19 December 2018, covers residency, social security and recognition of professional qualifications.

In addition, the two countries signed an agreement covering commerce, transport (road and air) and insurance.
Also signed was a temporary agreement allowing each other’s citizens to enter for work. Switzerland’s Federal Council agreed to create a pool of 3,500 work permits for UK citizens after Brexit on 13 February 2019.
