Two people who work for the company Dnata at Geneva airport have been arrested, according the newspaper Le Temps.
The individuals are suspected of stealing objects from passenger luggage over the last few months, possibly years.
Last Monday, airport police undertook an unannounced search of the airport’s baggage handlers. During the search two Dnata staff members were found in possession of objects taken from passenger luggage.
According to the public prosecutor an inquiry is underway.
Police suspect the thieves might have exploited security camera blind spots. In addition, one of the suspects already has a police record, something that should exclude someone from work as an airport baggage handler.
The incident is another blow to the airport’s reputation. In May 2019, Geneva airport’s head of security was found to have entered into suspect contracts with sub contractors.
According to the airport, security has not been compromised. “This is guaranteed at all times thanks to very strict checking of all personnel accessing the tarmac as well as all bags” said Madeleine von Holzen spokesperson and head of communications for the airport. “All people crossing over to the secure airside of the airport are X-ray checked” she said.
Dnata, which is part of the Dubai-based Emirates Group, employs more than 45,000 people and operates at 127 airports around the world.
