Around 1,800 refugees have been intercepted trying to cross into Switzerland over the last four weeks, and almost a quarter have been sent back to Germany, which has a policy of favouring Syrians.

Swiss border guards have stopped around 1,800 refugees along Switzerland’s northern border over the last four weeks. 444 have been turned away and sent back to Germany, more than four times the number in October, according to the newspaper the NZZ am Sonntag. The majority are Afghans. In October 104 were sent back and in July, 74 were.

Cooperation with German police has been stepped up according to Swiss customs spokesperson Atitila Lardori, in particular simplification of administrative procedures for sending refugees back.
