An analysis of data from Smartvote done by Swiss broadcaster RTS shows how the views politicians hold on a carbon tax on fuel have shifted between 2015 and 2019.

When asked whether carbon tax should be extended cover diesel and gasoline 52% of the 73 parliamentarians questioned in 2015 were against the idea. When questioned recently, 63% were in favour of extending the tax.
Currently, the tax is only applied to heating oil and gas but not fuel used by cars and other vehicles.
The biggest shift in opinion was among parliamentarians from the Christian Democrats (PDC/CVP), Radical Liberals (PLR/FDP), and Conservative Democrats (BDP/PBD). In 2015, 75% of parliamentarians from these parties were against adding a carbon tax to gasoline and diesel. Now 71% are in favour of it.
The 19 members of the Swiss People’s Party (UDC/SVP) questioned remained against extending the tax.
