Switzerland’s Federal council supports advice from a public health commission to tax e-cigarettes, according to Le Matin.
The plan to tax e-cigarettes forms part of an update to Switzerland’s tobacco laws, which are to be extended to include other products containing nicotine. In addition, the proposed rules will ban e-cigarette use in non-smoking areas and make it illegal to distribute them free.
The commission recommends the tax on e-cigarettes be lower than the tax on regular cigarettes, given the lower health risks.
Yesterday, in the US, America’s health secretary, said the Food and Drug Administration intended to remove most flavoured e-cigarettes from the market after nearly 500 people were diagnosed with a mysterious pulmonary disease from which six have died that may be linked to vaping, according the The New York Times.
The Council of States, Switzerland’s upper house, will decide on the proposal on 17 September.
