British Airways (BA) plans to increase services between London City Airport, in the Dockland’s area of London, and Geneva starting in September 2015.

From 6 September 2015 BA will increase flights to up to three a day with a schedule aimed at business customers. Flights will depart from London City at 08:15, 14:15 and 18:50 and from Geneva at 07:10,12:55 and 17:45. Morning and evening departures from both cities mean customers will be able to do a full day’s business in both Geneva and London.

Luke Hayhoe, British Airways’ general manager of commercial at London City, said “Geneva has traditionally been a leisure route for us from London City but more and more of our customers have been asking us to provide a year-round business schedule, linking these two important commercial centres and complimenting the services we offer from London Heathrow.”

London City opened in 1987 and is now London’s fifth busiest airport serving 3.6 million passengers in 2014. Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Luton are all busier. London City is the 15th busiest in the UK.

The airport’s short runway of only 1,508 metres limits the size of aircraft that can land and takeoff there.

Geneva ranks the 8th most popular destination from the Dockland’s airport. The top ten destinations by passenger numbers in 2014 were:

1. Amsterdam – 417,000
2. Zürich – 393,000
3. Edinburgh – 352,000
4. Frankfurt – 233,000
5. Dublin – 231,000
6. Glasgow-Int – 208,000
7. Luxembourg – 179,000
8. Geneva – 179,000
9. Rotterdam – 159,000
10. Milan–Linate – 145,000

London City airport is great for accessing East London and Canary Wharf. It is much closer than London Heathrow. In addition, London City Airport is small, which cuts the time required to navigate the airport and get to and from your gate. It also connects directly into London’s public transport, the Docklands Light Rail (DLR) network.
