In addition to making it difficult to see stars, artificial light has a negative effect on the natural biological rhythm of plants and animals. It also affects human health and consumes energy, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions.

In response to this the Natural History Museum of Geneva, the Geneva Astronomy Society and others came up with a plan to switch off street lighting across 209 municipalities spanning the greater Geneva region, which includes parts of France.
According to the organizers, 109 municipalities have already signed up. A map shows which communes plan to switch off their lights on 26 September 2019.
