Swiss Euro 2016

Not even a soggy pitch, several ripped shirts and a burst ball could stop the Swiss football team confounding the odds to draw 0:0 with France, the favourites to win. This score guarantees Switzerland a place in the next round, for the first time in the history of the UEFA Euro competition.

The Swiss team spent more time with the ball (59%) than the French (41%), and made 56% more successful passes (437 vs 279). Full match statistics are shown here.

The French hitÂ the crossbar twice putting Swiss fans on edge. SwissÂ goal keeper, Yann Sommer, once again did an excellent job of preventing the French from scoring.

Euro 2016 – UEFA football.

While Switzerland had impressive match statistics, the team failed to turn their dominance into goals. In Wednesday evening’s match against Romania, the Swiss were in possession of the ball for 61% of the game and achieved 86% passing accuracy.

Romania scored a penalty in the first half after a shirt pulling incident, and only 1 of Switzerland’s 19 goal attempts resulted in a goal, scored by Admir Mehmedi, leaving the final score Â a 1:1 draw. This result putsÂ Switzerland in second place in its group with 4 points, behind France with 6 points – France scored a 2:0 win against Albania in its second match.
