After a sharp temperature drop, Switzerland experienced this winter’s coldest night on Sunday evening reported the newspaper 20 Minutes. The usual places led the race for coldest. MeteoNews reported temperatures of -30 degrees in La Brévine in the canton of Neuchatel, and -29.5 degrees in Buffalora in mountainous Graubunden.

The coldest temperature of -36 degrees was recorded in the uninhabited region of Glattalp in the canton of Schwytz.

Most of Switzerland’s population endured relatively mild temperatures. Most cities on the Swiss plateau managed to stay above lows of -10 degrees.

Unfortunately for snow lovers, temperatures are set to rise by the coming weekend. By Sunday, negative temperatures below 2,000 metres will be rare according Meteo Swiss. Icy La Brévine is predicted to reach a relatively balmy low of 2 degrees on Sunday night. La Brévine’s 32-degree week-on-week shift in overnight temperature from -30 to 2 is striking.

Meteo Swiss data show that Switzerland broke a new temperature record last year. 2015’s average temperature was 1.29 degrees higher than the norm from 1981 to 2010. 2015 also brought the second hottest summer in 152 years with an average annual temperature 2.4 degrees higher than the norm from 1981 to 2010.

It is getting harder to argue against climate change and even harder to plan a ski holiday.
