Many on the left who were against the decision argued such a plan was against Switzerland’s constitution, the european convention on human rights and the Geneva conventions.
Article 25 of Switzerland’s constitution states that no one can be returned to a territory or state where they risk torture or any cruel or inhuman treatment.
Federal Councillor Karin Keller-Sutter vainly argued in favour of a position consistent with the constitution, however the argument that Switzerland’s security was more important than the fate of deported terrorists found favour with a majority of the house.
